Harry Potter Obsession: Butterbeer

It’s true. I love Harry Potter. More than most. In fact I once flew to California, had my boyfriend pick me up at the airport, and immediately drop me off at the theater so I could see the midnight showing with Kelly. It’s only natural that my roommate and I (who also is HP obsessed) host a Harry Potter party! With butterbeer…of course.

Harry Potter Party Invites | longdistancebaking.comFor those of you unaware, butterbeer is a popular drink in the wizarding world. According to Harry Potter Wiki over 5 million glasses of the beverage have been served at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. (Someday Kelly and I will go there! It’s on our friendship bucket list).

I thought it would be a simple drink to make, I’d seen multiple links for it on pinterest. But as I began looking through them, I realized they weren’t that simple! Or didn’t sound good. Some ingredient lists were excessively long. Others called for tablespoons of butter. While I realize butter is in the name, I’d rather not feel like I’m chugging sticks of fat. So I got down to work (if you can call it that) and starting experimenting.

Butterbeer | longdistancebaking.comWhile the drink can be made warm or cold, I went with the cold route. I started with cream soda as the base and some butterscotch schnapps. I generally prefer rum in cocktails (seems to have a less alcohol-y taste), but I actually liked the Whipped Cream Vodka over the Vanilla Rum in this drink. I thought I would need to experiment more with the frothy topping, but my first batch turned out delicious with heavy cream, butter extract and more butterscotch. I actually just wanted to keep drinking the topping, but resisted (see above regarding not wanting to drink unnecessary amounts of fat).

Butterbeer | longdistancebaking.comI’m so excited to have finally  made this drink and am sure it will be a hit at the party. My roommate heated hers up just to see how it tasted…it was just as good warm as it was cold! So pick your poison. Kelly: next time I visit we’ll be making this!
