Yellow Cake w/Chocolate Frosting

Yellow Cake w/Chocolate Frosting

Yellow cake with chocolate frosting- could there be a better cake combination?! As I have previously mentioned in other posts, I am making my best friend’s wedding cake. A wedding cake is a lot of pressure so I want to make sure that it looks

S’mores Caramel Corn (Crunchy)

S’mores Caramel Corn (Crunchy)

I love baking homemade goodies for people for Christmas gifts. I know everyone ends up with piles of cookies and chocolates and candies around the holidays…but I can’t help it. I love baking for people! It seems so much more authentic than just buying them

Kid Friendly Holiday Treats

Kid Friendly Holiday Treats

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

The holidays are always my favorite time of year! Here at Long Distance Baking, we love Christmas. We love it so much in fact, that we’ve been known to listen to Christmas music a couple times throughout the year. Every summer vacation needs at least one listen of Little Dummer Boy and Do You Hear What I Hear. Am I right??

My cousin is a 1st grade teacher and she asked me if we had any kid friendly holiday treats- holiday yummies that are cute and kids could easily help with making! Below is a list of kid friendly treats that can be altered for many holidays, not just Christmas!

1. Sugar Cookies– The holiday season would not be complete without sugar cookies and Steph’s sugar cookie recipe is to die for! Seriously, they are amazing and so fun for kids to help decorate!

2. Puppy Chow– Replace the Valentine’s red and pink M&Ms with Christmas M&M’s!

3. Cinnamon Ice Cream– What is cooler than making homemade ice cream?! This is a fun treat to make with kids because it’s so fun to see the ice cream churning and can turn into a fun science lesson! Although, I don’t quite know the science behind it myself… but I know Google does 🙂

4. Red Velvet Cupcakes– Red velvet is great any time of year but especially for the holidays! Lay out different types of holiday sprinkles and let your kids decorate the tops of the cupcakes!

5. No-Bake Cheesecake Bars– Steph decorated these bars for 4th of July but you can easily change the flag design. Use green icing to make a tree or garland and red frosting for holly berries or ornaments. The possibilities are infinite! Plus, it’s no-bake so it’s super easy to make!

6. Pumpkin Pecan Cinnamon Rolls– Cinnamon rolls are just fun to make! Be sure to include these as part of your holiday menu this year!

7. M&M Cookies– What I love about M&Ms is that they always come in holiday colors! Use Christmas M&Ms for a festive plate of cookies. Just be sure the kids don’t eat all the M&Ms in the process 🙂

We hope you enjoy these festive treats as much as we do! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from  Long Distance Baking 🙂

White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies {& Cookie Swap!}

White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies {& Cookie Swap!}

It just wouldn’t be the holiday season without excessive amounts of cookies, am I right?? My first big holiday baking day included these cookies. Kelly and I have been waiting a year to participate in the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap…we couldn’t wait to get

Homemade Graham Cracker Crust

Homemade Graham Cracker Crust

Tis the season for pies! Am I right? I hosted Thanksgiving this year and made three pies (for only 7 people…). That’s almost half a pie per person! With that much pie eating you need a little variety. I have a super easy pie dough

Cake Decorating Tools

Cake Decorating Tools

It’s December 8th. The Reed Wedding is on May 16th. Today I decided that I really needed to increase my wedding cake practice. Because I’m obviously running out of time…

Today I went Christmas shopping. However, I did not buy any gifts. Instead, I bought cake decorating supplies for myself. I promise I’m not a scrooge…

Anyway, I bought some really cool tools that I’m super excited about so I thought I would share them with you today! I’ll be sharing the cake I made on Friday 🙂

1. Icing Smoother– Makes cakes perfectly smooth. I didn’t use this tool today but I can’t wait to try it!

2. 3 pc. Icing Comb Set– This tool adds 6 different textures to your cake. I used this today and love it! It created the coolest ridges in the cake. What I love about this tool is that allows that it hides imperfections in the icing!

3. Angled Spatula– The BEST decorating tool! I actually bought this back when I took my cake decorating class and use it every time I frost a cake. This is a must in the cake decorating supply kit.

4. Bake Even Strips– I hate when I bake a cake it doesn’t bake flat, it forms a dome. These strips prevent that!

These are just a few items I’ve purchased to start working on cake decorating but can’t wait to continue adding to the collection! Here’s a sneak peak for Friday 🙂

Insanely Easy Microwave Popcorn

Insanely Easy Microwave Popcorn

I think a love of popcorn is a genetic thing. I mean…I haven’t seen any real research done on the topic, but from my own observations it appears to be true. My mom used to chastise my grandmother for eating popcorn for dinner, but I

Bunny’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Bunny’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Guys, my mom made cookies last night. And guess what, they were really good! She called it miraculous. This post was supposed to be homemade hot cocoa (coming next week now) but Bunsy has been on a chocolate chip cookie kick lately and wanted to

25 Days of Kindness: 2014

25 Days of Kindness: 2014

Can you believe it is December?? Where did the fall go?! We hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend filled with family, friends and delicious food.

This month tends to get hectic and busy, but giving back to others is a tradition we both strive to do more of during this time of year. If you were around LDB this time last year, you may remember our 25 Days of Kindness campaign. Well…we’re doing it again! And we want you to join.

25 Days of Kindness | longdistancebaking.com

We’ve created a list of 25 things to do from now until Christmas, that will all bring a little joy into someone else’s day:

  1. Send a hand written card to an older family member you haven’t talked to lately
  2. Buy the person’s coffee behind you
  3. Make a donation to or volunteer at your local food bank (or try Santa’s Milk Drive to donate milk, one of the most requested donations)
  4. Bake cookies for your neighbor
  5. Buy a gift off a giving tree
  6. Buy a warm drink for the salvation bell ringers
  7. Let the person behind you go ahead at the store
  8. Make a donation to a local animal shelter
  9. Share a positive/encouraging blog post with others
  10. Drop flowers off at hospital or senior center for whoever needs them most
  11. Add money onto someone’s expired parking meter
  12. Bring an extra cart or 2 from the parking lot into store
  13. Give care packs to the homeless
  14. Clean out your closet and donate clothes you no longer wear
  15. Be generous with compliments
  16. Send a care package to a soldier overseas (try Send Santa To The Troops)
  17. Send flowers to brighten a friend’s day
  18. Buy coffee for your boss
  19. Make a positive comment on a website or blog
  20. Start a piggy bank for a cause – when it’s full, donate it to that charity
  21. Donate gifts to toys for tots or to your local hospital
  22. Do household chore for someone
  23. Leave a gift for your mailman
  24. Thank your parents
  25. Leave a nice tip and card with someone working on Christmas

The important part is not that you complete each specific task on the given day, but just that you take some time away from your busy schedule to think about someone else and a way to help or encourage them. Giving back to others has a way of making you feel better about yourself, too!

We will be sharing our adventures on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (Kelly’s here and Stephanie’s here) using the hashtag #25DaysofKindness and we would love for you to join us! Hannah and Suruchi from Simply Living will be joining from Texas and London, Kelly is in California and Stephanie is in Idaho. Let’s see how many places we can spread the love! Please let us know if you are participating and we will add you to our list.

Happy Holidays, friends! Make sure to step back, breathe and remember what is truly important this time of year.

Royal Icing, Part II

Royal Icing, Part II

Believe it or not but I have never made homemade sugar cookies before. I’ve decorated homemade sugar cookies as a kid and I’ve eaten a ton around the holidays, but I have never made them myself. This past weekend I decided it was time to
